Application of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) themes in Accounting Curriculum of UK higher education institutions (HEIs)

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been recognised as one of the key priorities for businesses across various sectors, as well as for wider society, including higher education institutions (HEIs) globally. Although UK HEIs are considered forerunners in integrating the global sustainable development agenda into their strategic plans, there remains limited research on the challenges and effectiveness of teaching and learning (T&L) initiatives driven by these strategies.

This project therefore aims to explore how effective these initiatives are in promoting and integrating SDGs within business school curricula, with a particular focus on the accounting discipline. The study seeks to understand how accounting education contributes to SDG awareness and supports the development of graduates capable of making positive impacts on local and global communities. The objective is to examine how current T&L initiatives within UK HEIs integrate and promote SDGs through accounting curricula, and to identify the challenges and opportunities encountered by accounting academics when implementing SDGs in T&L.

This is a collaborative project carried out by four scholars from different UK universities and funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The research team members are:
